Bird Sighting – Owl 9-5-12

Tea chest

On several occasions I have seen an owl perched in a tall palm (Washingtonia Robusta) in the front garden. It has usually been scared off when I blunder into the garden and often the crashing of palm fronds has made me jump as well.

Difficult to identify without it holding still so I will try to sneak up on it in the future and study it more closely. I have noticed the owl droppings under the Aleppo Pines on the roadsides and in the past a pair tried to nest in a tea chest in shed at the top of some high shelves.

When it flew away it had an estimated wingspan of about 1 metre. It is probably a Barn owl.
